Academic Lecture Hall Acoustic Design

1

Academic lecture halls is core public spaces for teaching, academic reports, meetings and public speeches, with human speech transmission as the primary function.

Core requirements: clear and transparent voice, no echo or double sound, no sound howling during amplification, uniform sound field from front to back, low background noise, ensuring comfortable listening and efficient information receiving for classes, reports and Q&A sessions.

Common acoustic problems without professional acoustic treatment:

1. Too many hard materials such as stone, tile and latex paint cause insufficient sound absorption, long reverberation, muddy voice and unclear pronunciation;

2. Microphone sound system easily produces howling and noise, interrupting speeches and meetings;

3. Uneven sound field distribution: noisy front seats and unclear sound in the back;

4. Continuous background noise from air conditioning and fresh air equipment ruins the listening experience;

5. Multi-echo superposition in high stepped space seriously reduces speech intelligibility.

Reverberation Time RT60

Accurate reverberation control is critical for speech clarity:

- Large lecture hall (over 300 seats): 0.9–1.1s

- Medium lecture hall (100–300 seats): 0.8–1.0s

Long reverberation causes muddy speech and obvious echo; too short reverberation makes the space dry and unnatural for speeches.

Speech Intelligibility STI

Suitable for teaching, speeches and on-site Q&A:

- Standard level: STI ≥ 0.60 (Very Good)

- High-end project: STI ≥ 0.70 (Excellent)

Indoor Noise Control:

Comfort noise criterion: NC-30 ~ NC-35

Isolate equipment noise and outdoor noise to create a quiet and pure acoustic environment.

Acoustic Solutions by Area-Ceiling Systems

Recommended materials:

- Fiberglass acoustic ceiling: standard ceiling material to reduce ceiling reflection and mechanical noise, balance overall sound field;

- Suspended Diffuer Ceiling Baffles: Ceiling diffusers are used to scatter sound reflections, reducing echo and improving sound distribution.Compared to flat ceilings, they help create a more balanced and natural acoustic environment without over-absorbing sound energy.

Design Philosophy

4

We focus on professional acoustic design for speech-oriented spaces such as academic lecture halls and stepped classrooms, centered on three core principles: high speech intelligibility, uniform full-space sound field and cost-effective engineering.

We deeply match the acoustic demands of schools, government institutions and corporate parks, selecting durable engineering-grade acoustic materials. Under international acoustic standards, we optimize solutions according to clients' actual budgets.

We do not only provide basic sound absorption, but scientifically combine wall and ceiling acoustic systems to balance noise reduction, echo control and interior aesthetics.

Our design meets professional listening standards for teaching, academic reports and meetings, while satisfying fire safety, environmental protection, construction efficiency and long-term cost control. Within a reasonable budget, we create quiet, clear, comfortable and professional ideal acoustic environments for all kinds of academic spaces.
